Qantas eyes Pago Pago airport for emergencies

2:40 pm on 13 March 2008

The Australian carrier, Qantas Airline, is interested in using Pago Pago International Airport in American Samoa as an alternate airport for emergencies for its Sydney to Los Angeles flights.

Airline representatives have met airport officials and service providers to discus the option.

The Airport's Manager David Fuimaono says by October Qantas Sydney-LA flights will use the Airbus 380 planes.

Mr Fuimaono says one of the attractions for Qantas in Pago Pago is the new airport rescue and fire fighting facilities.

The Qantas officials hope to submit a draft Memorandum of Understanding to the American Samoan government within the next few months.
