2:36 pm on 14 March 2008

The United States Congress has approved a resolution which will continue the federally-funded food stamp programme for American Samoa for 30 days.

The programme, which sees elderly citizens and the disabled receive food vouchers, will now be extended past the March the 16th expiration date.

American Samoa receives about five million US dollars annually for the Food Stamp Programme.

The territory's member of the US Congress, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, says the extension will allow Congress to work out the final language of the farm legislation, which covers the food stamp programme.
