A severely deformed Samoan baby has had successful surgery in the United States despite all odds being against her.

Miracletina Nanai was born with severe facial deformities but was denied a visa for medical treatment in New Zealand because the Labour Department said surgery would not help.

So far she's undergone two operations in the US.

Kristin Taylor, who is with the family in America, says the latest surgery was on her face, ears, eyes, mouth, legs and stomach, and went well.

She says further surgery will take place later in the year.
