Goro Nickel pipeline dispute in New Caledonia remains unresolved

4:51 pm on 19 March 2008

The construction of a Goro Nickel mine waste disposal pipe in New Caledonia remains on hold amid opposition by environmental activists and some Kanaks.

Goro has temporarily suspended the building of an underwater waste pipe amid complaints it would cause environmental damage.

A group opposed to the Goro project, Rheebu Nuu, did well in the local elections and one of its members is now the mayor of the town of Yate close to the mine area.

An activists, Mike Hosken, says they do not want the pipe and will do all they can to prevent its construction.

"The local population has said 'no more pipe laying' until the UNESCO [decision], because the UNESCO decision will be in July. Humpback whales come to that area from July to September, so they're not allowed to lay the pipe then. It's a serious setback."

Mike Hosken says the new mayor is expected to ask for more stringent environmental measures and controls.
