Tonga to open High Commission in New Zealand

The Foreign Minister of Tonga says his country plans to open a High Commission in Wellington in June, shortly followed by a consulate in Auckland.

Sionatane Tu'uakinamolahi Taumoepeau Tupou says with more than 50-thousand Tongans in New Zealand, Tonga must offer them more service.

"The Honorable Tupou says opening the offices is also about Tonga having a closer and more reciprocal relationship to New Zealand because the two countries want the best for the region. He says the offices will also help those who wish to apply for dual citizenship, in the wake of a recent law change by the Tongan government. New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters has welcomed the move, saying it will the relationship between the two countries."
