Save the Children in Papua New Guinea says many HIV infections could be prevented if people with curable sexually transmitted diseases or STIs would see a doctor.

The country has one of the world's highest rate of HIV/AIDS infections.

The organisation's, Manish Jain, says people with curable sexually transmitted infections should seek medical help because they are even more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS.

"A very big cause for HIV is a prevalence of curable sexually transmitted infections. UN WHO figure quote that there're over one million cases a year of sexually transmitted infections in PNG. People who have STIs are about 35 to 40 percent more vulnerable to HIV and AIDS."

However, Manish Jain says health services in PNG are seeing no more than one percent of patients with curable STIs.
