PNG police about to get refurbished housing

7:30 pm on 20 March 2008

A long delayed multi million dollar project to improve housing for Papua New Guinea police is underway with the signing of agreements with contractors.

The Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, has urged the project managers to speedily implement the project.

Mr Baki said the Police Union and his management were working together to ensure that the welfare of the members, including housing issues, are being addressed.

New or refurbished barracks are critical needs across the country as efforts are made to instil a new discipline and pride in the police.

Mr Baki says for the sake of staff welfare the housing rehabilitation project must be transparent.

He says it will be overseen by the Law and Justice Sector Secretariat while a steering committee will be headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police and Chief of Administration, Tom Kulunga.
