Fiji Human Rights Commission wants Suva law firm probed

1:42 pm on 2 April 2008

The Fiji Human Rights Commission wants to find out if one of Suva's main law firms has broken the law.

It has asked the Fiji Law Society to investigate whether the firm Munro Leys breached laws when it facilitated the registration of the Duavata Initiative Limited.

Duavata Initiative is the commercial arm of the SDL party and lists the ousted prime minister, Laisenia Qarase and some his ministers as directors and shareholders.

The Human Rights Commission says the probe was requested in February.

It says since then the Law Society appears to have approved an inquiry into the Interim Attorney General's appointment.

It says if that case was given preference over the probing of Munro Leys, it would constitute victimisation.
