Samoan sailor may sue for wrongful dismissal after drug case dropped

7:46 am on 3 April 2008

A former sailor on Samoa's inter-island ferry serving the Apia/Pago Pago route is considering legal action against the police after charges of drug possession were thrown out.

Sione Futi may also sue his former employer, the Samoa Shipping Corporation, for wrongful dismissal.

Mr Futi was sacked more than two years ago when the police filed drugs charges after marijuana was allegedly found among his possessions on the ferry, MV Lady Naomi.

The case was dismissed after a state lawyer for the prosecution has asked to withdraw the charge because police couldn't provide proof.
