5:29 am on 7 April 2008

Two Australian teams are in the top three in the new Trans Tasman netball competition which began in Wellington on Saturday night.

The new ten team competition was opened with a game between Wellington's Central Pulse and the Melbourne Vixen.

But the young hosts were outclassed by the Vixens 33-17 who was led by Australian captain Sharelle McMahnon.

The local derby between the Canterbury Tactix and Northern Mystics was the key match played at Waitakere's Trusts Stadium in Auckland.

While the hosts Mystics took an early lead in the first quarter the Tactix fought back to take first round points with their 48-44 win.

And another close game across the Tasman between two local sides with the Queensland Firebirds beating the West Coast fever 48-46.

Today's matches will see the New South Wales Swifts against the Southern Steel while the early favourites Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic face Adelaide Thunderbirds.
