American Samoan call for security officers at schools

1:26 pm on 7 April 2008

A lawmaker in American Samoa has called on the government to place uniformed security officers at public high schools to prevent disruptive behaviour by students.

The request, through a non-biding resolution, came from Representative Puletu Dick Koko, who says instances of unacceptable behaviour are becoming more prevalent.

The measure says examples of such behaviour include increased drug trafficking, truancy and violence, both during and

after school hours.

Puletu says this is not only unacceptable from a social perspective, but is a distraction for motivated students as well as teachers, counsellors, principals and other administrators.

He says such behaviour further poses a threat to the safety, morals and general welfare of students, faculty and administrators.
