French Polynesian hospital project delayed

The planned opening of French Polynesia's new main hospital has been delayed until next year.

The Taaone hospital on the outskirts of Papeete was scheduled to open in November.

But the President, Gaston Flosse, said after a visit to the construction site that it wouldn't open as planned.

There are also questions about the costs of the project which is expected to be nearly 450 million US dollars.

French Polynesian radio says it is not known how much it will cost to run the new hospital, but estimates put it well above 100 million a year.
