A Marshall Islands soldier is recovering in the United States after sustaining serious injury in an attack on his Army unit in Iraq.

Army private Carl Superman Reiher has lost part of his left arm as a result of an assault on his armored vehicle.

He is the second Marshall Islander to be seriously injured since the war started in Iraq in 2003.

Several hundred Marshall Islanders are in the U.S. Armed Forces, mostly the Army.

The firefight involving Mr Reiher's Army unit happened last week in an unspecified region of Iraq.

He was wounded by at least three bullets.
