A bill has been introduced in the Guam Senate that will allow the Police Department to recruit more police officers.
The bill will enable the department to recruit 20 new police officers every year, for the next four years.
The Pacific News Centre reports that the measure is seen as one way of preparing the island for the influx of people due to the development of a US military base.
However, the Police Chief, Paul Suba, says the provisions of the bill don't go far enough.
Aside from beefing up the police workforce, Mr Suba says officers also need an increase in their pay.
He supports another bill which would give police officers and other law enforcement officers a 39-percent pay increase over a four-year period.
