New Caledonia's FLNKS gears up for 2009 provincial elections

New Caledonia's pro-independence FLNKS movement may hold a Congress in August as it is still to choose a president to succeed Roch Wamytan who quit the post in 2001.

The FLNKS held a weekend meeting to discuss the way ahead as the territory gears up for next year's provincial elections.

The gathering heard calls for greater cohesion among the parties making up the movement.

The FLNKS, which is led by a political bureau, is a signatory of the 1998 Noumea Accord on greater autonomy which provides for a gradual and irreversible transfer of powers from France to New Caledonia.
