Samoa police probe into missing funds takes in Ministry of Finance and Audit

3:54 am on 17 April 2008

Investigations by Samoa police into alleged misappropriation of funds in the Ministry of Police accounts section has included the Ministry of Finance and the government's audit office.

A police source says the investigation is focusing on how the payment procedures were handled between the police accounts section and the two government offices.

But the source says the Ministry of Finance and the Audit office have blamed the police accounts division for lack of supervision and poor management of funds which allegedly led to more than 150 thousand US dollars going missing.

However the assistant police commissioner and spokesman, Papalii Li'o Ta'eu Masipa'u, says so far not enough evidence has been found against the Ministry of Finance and the Audit office.

According to the assistant commissioner the police should finalise all charges this week before another court hearing next week.

Meanwhile only two police accounts employees and two accounts officers of the Ministry of Finance have been charged in relation to the case.
