The WTO tells Samoa restriction on left hand drive cars may break its rules

Samoa's plans to change to driving on the left hand side of the road and to ban on the importation of left-hand drive cars have led to an intervention by the World Trade Organisation.

The Ministry of Transport Infrastructure and Works parliamentary committee tabled a report which says the new rules are contradictory and not in accordance with the WTO's requirements.

Samoa is not yet a member of the WTO but an official has said the law change may affect its bid to join.

The committee had recommended that the clause on the import ban of left hand drive cars be deleted.
