Nauru holds new elections this week

Nauru goes to the polls this week after the President, Marcus Stephen, declared a state of emergency and dissolved parliament in a bid to end a bitter row with the opposition.

Mr Stephen said his government could not stand by any longer while the opposition pursued what he called its "self-serving agenda of economic destruction."

Nauru's parliament has been deadlocked for months with the 18 lawmakers evenly divided and arguing about the economic future of the struggling nation.

Elections are due to be held on Saturday.
