Tonga woman activist says poll outcome uncertain

3:31 pm on 23 April 2008

A women's activist in Tonga says tomorrow's election of nine People's Representatives appears wide open.

Up to 67,000 people will tomorrow vote for the nine popularly elected MPs, while 29 nobles are today choosing nine from within their ranks.

Ofa Guttenbeil Likiliki say in the past, at this stage in the campaign, there have been indications who the favourites are, but not on this occasion.

"The mood that is on the ground here is that anything could happen. So the campaign has been on full swing from all 70 plus candidates throughout all constituencies, and yes, the feeling is that anything can happen at the voting booth."
