Counting underway to find Tonga's nine People's Representatives

7:50 pm on 24 April 2008

Counting is under way in Tonga after today's election of the nine people's representatives in the 30-member parliament.

67,000 commoners had the right to vote today after yesterday's first round of the election in which nobles chose their nine representatives.

150 polling booths were open for today's polls and our correspondent says turnout was average.

The election is seen as significant as it is expected to be the last one before democratic reforms are implemented.

Pro-democracy politicians criticised the public broadcaster's restrictions in covering the election campaign.

Several of them are facing legal action over the 2006 riots.
