American Samoa's Police Commissioner has resigned from his post effective from next week.

Sotoa Savali handed his resignation to Governor Togiola Tulafono, saying he was stepping down because his brother, the former government treasurer Velega Savali, is running as lieutenant governor with Afoa M. Lutu in the November gubernatorial race.

Sotoa, who has been police commissioner since February 2005, says he felt that it was unfitting for him to remain with the Togiola Administration while his brother was running in the upcoming election.
