10:45 am on 29 April 2008

The leader of the Catholic Church in Samoa is calling for peace following last Friday's violent brawl involving students, leaving several people injured including a police officer.

One of those injured, a college student, was taken to hospital with severe burns to her face and chest as a result of petrol bomb.

Archbishop Alapati Lui Mata'eliga's apologised on television last night and raised questions of allegations that students of Don Bosco, a Catholic trade's vocational school at Alafua, had started the brawl.

Police sources say the students were alleged to have been armed with sharp metals, iron bars and petrol bombs.

They fought against students of Avele College, a government school involved in another separate brawl in the previous week with St Joseph College another Catholic school.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, will meet with college principals this morning to discuss a solution to stop further fights in town.
