Concerns in Fiji for health of its President

10:46 am on 29 April 2008

Fiji's Great Council of Chiefs taskforce wants the new-look institution to reconvene as early as possible because of President Ratu Josefa Iloilo's ailing health.

Under the Constitution, the GCC is the only body that can appoint a vice president.

GCC taskforce chairman Ratu Josateki Nawalowalo told Fijilive the President's health was of great concern.

He says this is the reason we want the 14 provinces to submit the names of their representatives to the council.

Ratu Josateki said in the absence of a vice president, the country could run into a crisis.

Ratu Jo said Fiji can become 'stateless' when executive authority no longer exists.

He said it's imperative that we appoint a vice president immediately.

The provinces of Namosi, Rewa and Naitasiri have so far rejected the new laws governing the appointment of GCC members.

The taskforce is expected to be in Tailevu tomorrow.
