Renewed call in American Samoa for teacher's pay increase

11:10 am on 5 May 2008

A lobby group in American Samoa, Common Cause, is again calling on the territory's top political leaders implement the necessary salary hikes for public school teachers.

In a letter this week to the Fono leadership and Governor Togiola Tulafono, the Common Cause president Ben Teo called for action regarding teachers pay.

He said the first Fono session of 2008 ended without any mention of the teachers' pay increase.

He said based on a review of the current government pay scale, teachers are the lowest paying professionals within the government.

The governor's office submitted to the Fono the $2 million teachers reclassification bill over the weekend, which is expected to be introduced in the Fono soon.

Mr Te'o says he will not accept the worn-out excuse of 'no funding source' for a raise in the salaries for teachers.
