American Samoa village mayor on probation over assault

3:07 pm on 5 May 2008

The Chief Justice in American Samoa, Michael Kruse, has fined the mayor of Pago Pago village one thousand US dollars and placed him on probation for two years.

He was also ordered to apologize to a man he assaulted during the policing of the nightly curfew by the untitled men of his village.

The Chief Justice sounded a warning that village authority does not extend to law enforcement.

The village mayor had pleaded guilty to third degree assault for ordering members of the aumaga or untitled village men to beat up two others who were being noisy during the village curfew.

The Chief Justice says the role for the aumaga is policing the curfew, not law enforcement.
