The Acting Minister of Civil Aviation in the Cook Islands says he welcomes any airline applying for licenses to make domestic airfares more competitive.
A new airline, Kia Orana Air, has applied for a licence to compete with Air Rarotonga as a passenger and freight carrying service to both the northern and southern group of islands.
Wilkie Rasmussen says Kia Orana Air, whose application is before government, is offering airfares at half the cost of Air Rarotonga.
"Look for me personally, and being a member of parliament from the outer islands and in particular from the Northern Group, it is absolutely essential that we do get a second service or even a third service because the fares of the current service are just astronomical."
Another company reported to be seeking a licence is Pacific Air Expeditions.
