The All Blacks first five Dan Carter will return to action for the Crusaders this weekend after being named on the bench for Saturday night's super 14 match against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane.

Carter has been out of action for six weeks after suffering an ankle sprain playing against the Hurricanes.

There are five changes to the Crusaders lineup with halfback Kahn Fotuali'i, number 8 Mose Tuiali'i, lock Ross Filipo, hooker Ti'i Paulo, and prop Wyatt Crockett all elevated to the starting lineup.

Coach Robbie Deans says physically Carter is ready to return but by bringing him back via the bench they'll be able to ease him in slowly.

The Crusaders have a ten point lead at the top of the table and have won on each of their last five visits to Brisbane.
