A regional non-governmental organisation says it's saddened about the resignation of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat secretary general.

Greg Urwin, a former Australian diplomat, was appointed as secretary general to the forum four and a half years ago, but he has now resigned due to ill-health.

During his tenure he has been responsible for ushering in the Pacific Plan for regional cooperation and integration.

The Pacific Islands Association of Non-Governmental Organisations programme manager, Katabwena Tawaka, says he has greatly supported their work.

"He believed in working together in terms of regionalism. He was very active in terms of putting an accreditation policy together. That could be appoint where we, the Pacific NGO's could work on from there."
