10:32 am on 8 May 2008

The Chairman of the Russell Islands Plantations Limited, RIPEL, Patrick Wong, won his high court challenge yesterday against a deportation order on him.

In his ruling, High Court Judge, Justice Goldsbrough said the order declaring Mr Wong a prohibited immigrant is defective therefore quashed.

And he went further to say that all actions by the Director of Immigration under the authority granted to him by the Minister for labour and immigrations is null and void.

Mr Wong, an Australian citizen, claims he was abducted from his hotel by police and immigration officials who tried to force him on flight to Australia yesterday.

He however did not have a passport on him therefore was unable to board the flight.

Mr Wong is the second RIPEL director to have received deportation orders from the Director of Immigration.

The Managing Director of RIPEL, John Whiteside being declared persona non grata by the government and served deportation orders.

However, a High Court order has now prohibited the deportation notice.
