Fiji/Forum group seeks details of Hannah threat

The Pacific Islands Forum's Joint Working Group which is trying to assist Fiji towards elections in March next year, says the interim Government has to explain why the Fiji Times publisher was deported.

The Government has claimed Evan Hannah was removed because he was a threat to national security but the Joint Group says the Government needs to clarify the nature of the threat he allegedly posed.

The Group also wants to know when the interim Government will provide the promised timetable for the election preparations.

And it has called on the Government to appoint a Supervisor of Elections as soon as possible.

This follows the withdrawal of the appointment of a New Zealand lawyer who had not revealed to Fiji authorities that he had previously been struck off in New Zealand.
