Pacific community in New Zealand sick of rumours over Taito

9:52 am on 10 May 2008

A Pacific Community leader says his people are sick of rumours about the former Labour MP, Taito Phillip Field, and they want his trial done so they can know the truth.

Taito will stand trial on bribery and corruption charges over immigration matters involving constituents.

He faces 40 charges, 15 of them alleging bribery and corruption and 25 that he attempted to pervert the course of justice.

Richard Pamatatau was at the meeting and filed this report.

"The leaders at a conference in Auckland on Friday agreed a fair trial will show whether Mr Field is guilty of the charges against him. Fuiamaono Karl Endeman says the Pacific population is sick of hearing rumours and wants to know the truth once and for all because it affects everyone."

Moka Ngaro says every Pacific Islander is interested to hear the evidence put forward, because many of them regard Mr Field as a hard worker for their communities.
