Campaigner in American Samoa welcomes teacher salary reclassification

The President of Common Cause American Samoa, Ben Te'o, has welcomed the passage of the teacher salary reclassification plan.

Mr Te'o says he is particularly pleased that the Fono has required that teacher increments be made every year, instead of the every two years as the administration had proposed.

He says hopes more can be done for teachers in the long term.

"That it is enticing enough for those teachers here is American Samoa to stay."

Mr Te'o led a protest at Utulei Beach last year for an increase in teacher salaries.

Meanwhile,

More than twenty teacher volunteers from the United States will be arriving in mid July to teach in local schools for a year.

The volunteers are from an organization called World Teach.

The deputy Director of Education, Filo Jennings, says the teachers will work in hard to fill content areas such as Maths, Science and English.
