French Polynesia gets new agriculture minister in latest reshuffle

There has been a small cabinet reshuffle in French Polynesia - the second since President Gaston Tong Sang came to power last month.

He appointed Fernand Roomataaroa as the new agriculture minister to replace Haamoetini Lagarde.

This comes amid claims that the people of Mr Roomataaroa's home island wanted to be represented in government.

The reshuffle also follows reports that he had met the opposition leader, Gaston Flosse, which fuelled speculation that he could switch sides and bring down the government.

Two weeks ago, Mr Tong Sang made Louis Frebault a minister, giving in to threats by his wife, who as an assembly member appeared prepared to switch sides.

Mr Tong Sang became president a month ago after two members switched sides to give him the minimum 29 member support in the assembly to oust the Flosse-led government formed seven weeks earlier.

Close relatives of the two defectors were subsequently made ministers.
