PNG Chief Ombudsman accused of possible misconduct over Somare probe

Papua New Guinea's chief ombudsman has been accused of possible misconduct in his pursuit of an investigation into Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare's financial affairs.

In a March 2008 letter, the Ombudsman Commission's director of leadership Roderick Kamburi wrote to Sir Michael saying chief ombudsman Ila Geno may have acted inappropriately, fraudulently, abused his role as chief ombudsman, or been negligent and reckless.

The Prime Minister's lawyers last week applied for an injunction to halt an ombudsman's investigation into alleged irregularities in Somare's personal finance returns, some dating back to 1992.

The application is set to resume this week with Charles Mendi, representing the Ombudsman Commission, challenging Sir Michael's use of the courts to stop an investigation.

The investigation has been suspended until the issue is resolved.

In March, Mr Kamburi wrote that Mr Geno "may be guilty of misconduct in office for being in breach of the constitution".

Mr Kamburi said the chief ombudsman may have acted unilaterally and that there was "no evidence of deliberation of this matter".
