Manihiki mayor welcomes patrol boat and extra officers

The Cook Islands Police are sending a patrol boat and extra officers to Manihiki, amid concerns over law and order on the atoll.

The police patrol boat, Te Kukupa, is being sent after Cabinet was asked for around 300 thousand US dollars to cover fuel costs.

Two people have been arrested after a flight had to be sent back to Rarotonga, when landowners protesting a land court hearing planted a small coconut tree on the airstrip.

The mayor, Kora Kora, says the police will help secure the runway.

"For the Government to send teh patrol boat, I think it's the way forward, one, I believe that the people that have been arrested on the island, should be taken on board, because we don't have a a holding cell, or a prison on Manihiki. I think it's the right call, yes, to put law and order in place."
