The founding Congress of France's New Centre party has chosen a French Polynesian politician, Philip Schyle, as its national secretary for overseas affairs.

Mr Schyle, who has been the assembly president for a one-year term, is the leader of the Fetia Api Party which is a member of French Polynesia's ruling To Tatou Aia coalition.

His appointment was made in Nimes where the French defence minister, Herve Morin, was elected as party president.
