The Hilton hotel project in the Cook Islands remains on target

Dan McEwan, a director of the New Zealand based McEwan property development company says the Hilton Spa and Resort hotel project on the Cook Islands main island Rarotonga is on track.

The project which began as the Vaimaanga Hotel in 1987 was plagued with problems with the unfinished building laying idle for many years.

Last year the international hotel chain Hilton agreed to manage the abandoned project with the McEwan company in charge of the development.

Mr McEwan says despite some controversy over the joint venture partnership with the TePaki group everything is up to date.

"The landlord is receiving payment as though the hotel in itself is fully operational and we're at this point in time making a decision commercially as to when we will commence to build the project, the economy both local and in New Zealand has played some part on revising the actual start date."

Dan McEwan says they won't be rushing to release the construction start date.
