The family of a Samoan man shot in California over the weekend plans to sue the Los Angeles Police Department.

Media in Los Angeles says 46-year old Roketi Su'e was killed as he was walking home from a birthday party.

Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department says two officers had responded to reports of a man behaving erratically and she says Mr Su'e resisted arrest.

She says the officers initially used batons and a Taser to try and calm him but when this had no effect he was shot several times.

Family members in Los Angeles say that Mr Su'e, who was bipolar and was dying of lung cancer, was unarmed and upset because he had had a fight with his girlfriend.

An eyewitness has been reported saying the officers shot Mr Su'e six times.
