Former PNG PM prepared to force government to stop issuing logging concessions

8:42 pm on 21 May 2008

The Governor of the Papua New Guinea province of New Ireland, former PNG Prime Minister, Sir Julius Chan, says he will force the Government to stop issuing new logging concessions for the province.

Sir Julius says he wants the concessions deferred until a number of serious issues are resolved.

He says this includes land disputes, trespassing and the failure to develop infrastructure and provide employment opportunities for locals.

Sir Julius says if the national Government doesn't respond his provincial administration will act.

"We can refuse to co-operate with the national government to ensure that the ban or the moratorium that I put is enforce, by establishing dialogue with the local government councils and through them to the wards and to the landowners."
