Paris signing of French Polynesian contract deferred again

9:20 am on 27 May 2008

The signing in Paris of a new development contract for French Polynesia has been deferred for a second time in a week.

It was to be signed by the French interior minister, Michele Alliot-Marie, who is also in charge of overseas territories, and the French Polynesian president, Gaston Tong Sang, a few hours ago.

However, the Elysee Palace now says it will be signed by the French President Nicolas Sarkozy late on Tuesday Paris time.

The deal for 280 million US dollars in French assistance over five years was initially to be signed by Mr Sarkozy last Thursday.

However, the contract was not ready because the assembly in Tahiti didn't vote on it until last Friday.
