The Cook Islands is hosting a four-day sub-regional workshop on the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals for five Polynesian countries.

The workshop is being run by the United Nations Development Programme and is aimed at policy makers and civil society organisation members from the Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Tokelau and Tonga.

The discussions are expected to help to integrate the countries' planning and budgeting for the achievement of the development goals.

The targets include halving extreme poverty, halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education by 2015.
