A fresh fish company in Papua New Guinea has been forced to stop work and lay off more than 50 of employees.

Frescoma PNG Limited's Lae operation plant has been quiet over the past month and management has decided to reorganise the company's failing nationwide operations.

The Filipino company has also called off its pump boats, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over the heads of local fishing cooperatives along the Huon and Finschhafen coasts and Siassi.

The National newspaper reports Frescoma accountant Bong Abalos saying the supply of fresh yellow fin tuna, mainly for export, coming in from the boats weren't enough to support operation costs.

Mr Abalos says its hoped the workers will be rehired again in September as the company plans to resume operations again then.
