A decree by the French prime minister, Francois Fillon [fee-yo], has set September the 21st as date for the election to the French senate in French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna.
A third of all 343 senate seats are up for renewal in September when voters elect upper house representatives for a six-year term.
Following recent changes, French Polynesia will now be eligible to choose two senators.
Candidates have to submit their applications to stand between September the 1st and 12th.
The current French Polynesian member of the French senate is Gaston Flosse, who is also the opposition leader in the French Polynesian assembly.
Robert Laufoaulu has been the senator for Wallis and Futuna for the past ten years.
