American Samoa upgrades aircraft fire training

American Samoa is to have the only hot fire training facility in the South Pacific.

Firefighters at Tafuna airport will be trained to cope with an aircraft disaster using aviation fuel, instead of propane or other gases.

The special assistant to the Director of Port Administration, Peter Lefiti, says the advantage of using aviation fuel for the training exercises is that it will provide an environment that will resemble a real aircraft fire.

The Federal Aviation Administration is spending nearly nine million US dollars on the hot fire training facility which will serve as a training center for the rest of the South Pacific.
