CNMI policeman caught up in insurance scam

A Northern Marianas police officer has confessed to being involved with a group of persons involved in a car insurance scam.

The Saipan Tribune newspaper quotes what it calls reliable sources at the Department of Public Safety as saying the officer went to the DPS Criminal Investigation Division last week where he admitted participation in the scam.

The officer reportedly admitted preparing false Traffic Crash Reports for an auto shop owner last year in exchange for sums of up to 150 US dollars.

It is alleged that the officer would get a call after the shop owner, an auto shop employee and an insurance company employee had the vehicle registration and drivers licenses of the operators copied and ready for him.

The insurance company employee and the auto shop personnel are reported to have been arrested over the weekend.
