10:45 am on 2 June 2008

Hundreds of guests including dignitaries are expected to attend Samoa's celebration of 46 years of independence.

Events begin with a special church service this evening at the Methodist church in Matafele in Apia to be followed by a variety of entertainment and activity in the next two days.

The celebration will also be the first time the former prime minister, Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, will officiate in his role as head of state after the death of Malietoa Tanumafili II, a year ago.

Government leaders, schools and organizations will attend the flag raising ceremony at Tiafau malae and a march pass tomorrow morning where the head of state will also address the nation.
