The recipient of the Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Tufuga Holoatu Nesi Lagatule, says helping Pacific people was something she's done all her life.

Mrs Lagatule who also received the Queens Service Medal in 1988 says helping people began in her village in Niue.

She received an award in this year's Queens Honours for her work with Pacific women in Christchurch on issues which include abuse, and domestic violence,

Mrs Lagatule says her life was never about sitting around and doing nothing

"When you see something happen in the community you go out there and you help them and you do things that its available to them to help themselves."

There were seven recipients in all and they include artist Michael Tuffrey and former All Black great Tuigamala Va'aiga Lealuga Tuigamala who receive the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, while Auckland University Pacific senior lecturer Misatauveve Dr Melani Anae receives the Queens Service Order. Three others received the Queens Service Medal.
