False alarm in Tahiti over reported plane crash

3:45 pm on 4 June 2008

The authorities in French Polynesia say the reported sighting of a low flying plane and a small bush fire led to a false alarm that an aircraft had crashed on Tahiti.

Several people in the Papara area claimed to have seen the plane vanish and a military helicopter was sent out to search the suspected crash area.

After several hours, it was concluded that it was a false alarm.

Airport officials in Tahiti had said no authorisation had been given for a small plane to take off.
