The leader of a Catholic NGO in Fiji says he thinks the interim government would only abrogate the constitution as a measure of last resort.
Fiji's interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says abolishing the country's constitution ahead of elections would be a simple exercise.
Father Kevin Barr, from the Ecumenical Centre for Research Education & Advocacy, says the interim government has been trying to be supportive of the constitution.
"Thye've made that fairly clear. I suppose the Commodore's remarks were if all else fails, there is the possibility of abrogating the constitution and I was interested that Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, when he came down recently, also made that suggestion that it was a possible way out to abrogate the constitution."
