6:23 pm on 5 June 2008

The Solomon Islands Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Colin Beck, has been elected one of the Vice Presidents for the 63rd Session of the General Assembly.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports Ambassador Beck as saying the position would increase Solomon Islands visibility at an international level.

He says it would also allow the country to preside over more international issues through the period from this September to September 2009.

The Solomon Islands Mission in New York is presently vice chair of the Alliance of Small Islands Developing States and is also a member of the Bureau of the 50 Least Developed Countries.
